WHAT IS HV – HIGH VOLTAGE TESTING?

ETL_Technologies_GmbH_Prüfart_elektrische_Hochspannungsprüfung

Electrical high voltage testing, also referred to as high voltage insulation testing or dielectric strength testing, is a procedure for assessing the insulation resistance of electrical devices or installations. In this process, a high voltage is applied to ensure that the insulation of the device or installation complies with the necessary safety standards. The test is conducted to identify potential insulation faults or weaknesses that could lead to an electric shock or other hazards.

High voltage testing is typically performed using specialized testing equipment capable of generating high voltage while simultaneously limiting the flow of current to prevent damage to the devices being tested.

HOW IS HIGH VOLTAGE TESTING CONDUCTED?

Here are the basic steps to conduct a high voltage test:

  1. Preparation: Ensure that the device is turned off and disconnected from the power grid. Also, check if the testing equipment is functioning properly and calibrated.
  2. Connection of the Testing Equipment: Connect the testing equipment to the test points of the device. Ensure that the connection is firm and secure.
  3. Setting the Test Voltage: Set the desired test voltage on the testing equipment. The test voltage depends on the specific requirements of the device or the standard being tested against.
  4. Conducting the Test: Turn on the testing equipment and initiate the high voltage test. The testing equipment generates a high voltage applied to the device or component. The test duration may vary based on requirements.
  5. Assessment of Results: During the test, monitor for any breakdown or unauthorized current flow. If a breakdown or unauthorized current flow is detected, the test is considered failed. If no breakdown or unauthorized current flow occurs, and the insulation resistance of the device or component is maintained, the test is considered passed.

Throughout the entire process, safety guidelines according to EN 50191 must be adhered to. It is crucial that the test is conducted by trained personnel, as high voltages are used, and dangerous situations can arise. Additionally, the lines or devices to be tested should be de-energized before the test to prevent accidents.
